Disruption of Container Flows from India’s West Coast Ports

Table of contents

Dear Customer,

At Freight Systems, we are committed to keeping our clients informed about any developments that may affect our services. We would like to bring to your attention the ongoing disruptions affecting container flows from India’s west coast ports, particularly Mundra Port.

Key Issues:

  1. Severe Weather Impact:
  • Torrential rain and flooding last week have severely impacted operations at Mundra Port. The extreme weather brought the entire shipping system to a standstill for at least three days.
  • The flagship entity of Adani Ports (APSEZ), which operates five container terminals at Mundra, is working to clear the backlogs caused by the disruption. However, it may take up to a week or longer for the situation to normalize, depending on further weather developments.
  1. Vessel Delays:
  • Significant delays have been reported by container lines, with some vessels experiencing longer wait times for berthing. This has caused a ripple effect, leading to some vessels bypassing Mundra or diverting to other ports along the coast.
  1. Prioritization of Export-Centric Vessels:
  • Due to the backlog, Mundra Port is currently prioritizing export-centric vessel calls to manage yard inventory more effectively. However, this may lead to further delays for import cargos.
  1. Rail Service Disruptions:
  • Over 50% of Mundra’s container volumes are moved by rail, which has also been affected by the weather. Although rail services are operational, there is a backlog of inward trains that the port is actively working to clear.
  1. Nhava Sheva Port Congestion:
  • The disruptions at Mundra have had a cascading effect on supply chains in the region, particularly at Nhava Sheva Port. Recent road traffic restrictions and increased cargo volumes have exacerbated delays, with truckers and freight station operators reporting gate-in / out turnaround times of up to 20 hours.
  • The congestion has led to delays in both exports and imports, putting additional pressure on logistics operations in the area.

We are monitoring the situation closely and keep you informed of any further developments. We advise our customers to anticipate potential delays in both export and import shipments from India’s west coast ports and to plan accordingly. If you need any further assistance, please reach out to our customer service or sales team at info@freightsystems.com.

We understand the challenges this disruption may cause and are committed to providing the necessary support to mitigate the impact on your supply chains. Thank you for your understanding and continued partnership.

Regards,

Team Freight Systems
