Dear Valuable Customer,
As of March 3, 2026, the Middle East shipping industry is in a state of severe disruption due to a sudden escalation in regional conflict. The situation has shifted from localized Red Sea tensions to a broader maritime crisis affecting the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.
1. Strait of Hormuz & Persian Gulf Crisis
• De Facto Closure: The Strait of Hormuz is considered “effectively closed” to many commercial vessels.
• Tanker Attacks: At least three tankers were struck in early March, with confirmed casualties.
• Operational Suspensions: MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd suspended bookings or diverted vessels.
• Insurance & Costs: War-risk coverage withdrawn; VLCC rates exceeded $400,000 per day.
2. Port Operations Status
• UAE: Jebel Ali resumed March 1 with enhanced security; Fujairah bunkering slowed.
• Oman: Duqm reported drone strikes; Salalah suspended General Cargo Terminal.
• Bahrain: Khalifa Bin Salman Port suspended until further notice.
• Qatar: Temporary maritime suspension; GPS degradation near Ras Laffan.
• Saudi Arabia & Iraq: Ports operational under heightened security.
3. Red Sea & Global Rerouting
• Cape Diversions: Asia–Europe services rerouted around Africa, adding weeks to transit.
• Surcharges: $1,500–$3,500 contingency surcharges introduced.
• Dangerous Goods Ban: Hazardous bookings stopped across the Middle East.
4. Strategic Shifts
• Air Freight Pressure: Regional airspace restrictions causing significant backlogs.
• Supply Chain Reconfiguration: Businesses reassessing dependence on narrow maritime corridors.
