Typhoon and Golden Week Impact in China

Dear Customer,

At Freight Systems, we are committed to keeping our clients informed about any

developments that may affect our services. We would like to bring to your attention the ongoing significant disruptions impacting activities in and around Shanghai.

Shanghai being the major gateway for exports Ex-China, any disruptions there impact global trade adversely. Shanghai is witnessing disruption caused by Typhoon Bebinca and the upcoming Typhoon Pulasan. In another 2 weeks, China will have the yearly ritual (Golden Week) holidays, which will cause congestion and space restrictions across Air & Ocean, resulting in delayed departures Ex-China.

Key Issues:

Typhoon Bebinca made landfall in Shanghai on September 16, 2024, causing the strongest storm the region has seen in over 70 years.

  • All flights from Shanghai’s two major airports were cancelled, impacting over 600 flights.
  • Ships in Shanghai’s ports have been recalled, and anchored vessels are experiencing delays.

Typhoon Pulasan is forecasted to make landfall on September 19, 2024, with damaging winds, heavy rains, potential flooding, and mudslides expected across coastal areas and inland regions in Eastern China. Severe weather is forecasted to continue from September 19 to 20, 2024.

This will lead to further delays in vessel berthing, loading, and unloading, significantly affecting the shipping schedules. Port operations tend to resume slowly, causing congestion as ships line up for berthing, leading to delays in cargo handling and container movements. These effects ripple through the supply chain, causing disruptions not only locally but also globally due to the interconnected nature of modern logistics.

Upcoming Golden Week Holiday (October 1-7, 2024):

China’s Golden Week holiday from October 1 to 7 will further affect logistics and transportation across the country.

  • Many businesses, factories, and government offices, including customs clearance operations, will either close or operate at reduced capacity, causing longer lead times for shipments.
  • We advise planning ahead for any shipments to or from China during this period and recommend allowing additional lead time for all logistics activities in the region, particularly in Shanghai and Eastern China.

We are monitoring the situation closely and will keep you informed of any further

developments. If you need any further assistance, please reach out to our customer service or sales team at info@freightsystems.com.

We understand the challenges this disruption may cause and are committed to providing the necessary support to mitigate the impact on your supply chains. Thank you for your understanding and continued partnership.

Regards,

Team Freight Systems
